Children's Dentistry Services

We have a large range of dental services for kids. Some of our services are listed below, but we have many, many more!

Fissure Sealants

Your dentist may recommend your child to have fissure sealants for a couple of reasons. The fissures are a term to describe the wiggly pattern in the molar’s biting surface. In high risk decay patients, these fissures can collect microscopic pieces of food and plaque can form which will lead to decay.

Placement of fissure sealants

The tooth is cleaned with a microabrasion treatment which is needed to clean into those fissures. A surface primer is then applied , rinsed then the sealant itself is squeezed into the fissures in liquid form and set with a light. The sealant fills the groove pattern of the fissure flat, so no food and plaque can collect.

Children's Fillings

With all children’s treatment, we aim to make every appointment fun and care-free.

If your child has to have a filling we won’t make a big deal out of it but will educate both you and your child in the age-appropriate way on its procedure.

We have special coping techniques to assist your child through the appointment should they need it. Children remember, so we are here to make it run smoothly and allocate plenty of time for this appointment.

Children’s Tooth Filling Procedure

  1. Firstly a topical anaesthetic jelly is placed on the gum. This allows better acceptance of the local anaesthetic.
  2. Next the tooth is numbed with the local anaesthetic.
  3. Once fully numbed up, the tooth cavity is prepared and decay removed with the dental drill and suction is used to remove excess water and saliva. The tooth is now ready for its filling.
  4. A packable white filling material is inserted into the tooth cavity, and set hard with the hand held light. The new filling is now polished and checked how it fits against the top on the top.

The new filling may be a little uncomfortable for 1-2 days depending on the difficulty. Your dentist will give you post op instructions on how to take care of the new filling and what foods you can eat.

Children's Dental Hygiene

Good oral habits start here, and it is our job to help educate your child with good lifelong hygiene habits.

Promoting good oral health early on, sets them up for life with a solid understanding on how to look after their oral health. If we can educate the patients early, they can then take control of their own dental destiny.

After each clean we always leave time for running through some important diet advice and brushing techniques with our little ones.

We have tooth models and toothbrushes to show the children show how to brush the teeth and gums correctly. Once kids have mastered the brushing we will push them to get flossing! Why wait until they are in their 20s?

Fluoride and Kids

Fluoride is a mineral that is found in all natural water sources and water-fluoridation is one of the most widespread public health methods to greatly and cost-effectively reduce dental decay and crumbling.

When used as directed, fluoride is a safe and effective agent that can prevent and control dental caries. Acid produced from dental plaque will demineralise the enamel surface causing it to eventually create cavities.

Fluoride remineralises the calcium hydroxyapatite structure in enamel, which is more resistant to acid attacks. The remineralisation effect of fluoride can both reverse the early decay process as well as create a tooth surface that is more resistant to decay.

Fluoride can be delivered topically and systemically. Topical fluorides such as toothpastes, mouth-rinses and professionally applied varnish treatments strengthen teeth already present in the mouth, making them more decay resistant. Systemic fluoride treatments are in the form of tablets, These plus topical forms are truly the best for building maximum tooth resistance to acid attack.

Our Fluoride treatments for kids

We have fluoride treatments in a foam and gel varnish in lots of yummy flavours for kids and adults! It is applied after your oral hygiene appointment on clean teeth and left for 1 minute.
Call us if you have any questions on fluoride, fluoride treatments or to assess whether your child would benefit from this treatment, do contact us by any of the usual methods.
